Most tourists from outside North Sumatera prefer the most convenient flight to Kuala Namu International Airport and continue heading south to Parapat or Tigaras through Pematang Siantar by land. Parapat or Tigaras is a 4-5 hours trip (approximately 180 km) by car from Kuala Namu Airport. Alternatively, you can land at the closest airport from Samosir Island, Silangit Airport at Siborong-borong and travel north by land to Balige or Muara (approximately 20 km in distance and a 30-45 minutes trip by car).
Each town (Parapat, Tigaras, Balige, and Muara) has at least 1 port which is interconnected to another port in Samosir Island that is also functioned as the entrance to the island. You can cross the Lake Toba by boat/ferry which costs only 15.000 IDR per person. Ferry ride allows you to bring your own vehicle along to Samosir Island.
- The Tigaras Port is connected to Simanindo, a little town at the northern of Samosir Island. This port is pretty close to Rogate Beach Hotel in Ambarita.
- Ajibata Port in Parapat is connected to Tomok. This route is the closest one from the Hotel and it is also the most preferred route by tourists.
- At the southern part of Samosir Island there are 2 other ports: Sipinggan which is connected to Muara and Onan Runggu which is connected to Balige.
Some people and tourists also prefer to travel by land from Tele through Pangururan for a more fascinating view. Panguruan is at the western part of Samosir Island. By heading north through the hillside you can reach Rogate Beach Hotel after approximately 1 hour trip (35,7 km) by car.
